A significant technical consideration for administrators was the removal of SQL Server Express dependencies starting with BarTender 2019 R5: SQL Server Express was no longer installed by default, replaced by LocalDB for internal application storage. However, many BarTender features still required a local (for Automation and Enterprise Editions) or remote (for Enterprise Edition only) SQL Server instance for the BarTender System Database.
The Enterprise edition requires a two-part licensing model: an (per installation) plus Printer Licenses (per connected printer device). An Application License for 10 printers was priced around €6,673.12 (approximately $7,200 USD at the time), while individual Printer Licenses could be added for $521 each. The system also required a single instance of the Seagull License Server (SLS) to be installed on the network to enforce licensing policies, replacing the older license server from previous versions. For administrators accustomed to the older Seagull License Server, the 2019 version introduced a new Licensing Service that is not backward compatible with earlier BarTender releases.
