The GUID Partition Table (GPT) was introduced as the successor to MBR, using 64-bit LBA to support significantly larger drives. However, GPT support in Windows required both a UEFI-based system and a 64-bit operating system for boot volumes; for data drives, Windows Vista and later could natively read GPT, but Windows XP 32-bit remained entirely incompatible without additional software.
