Nelle Harper Lee (April 28, 1926 – February 19, 2016) grew up in Monroeville, Alabama. As the daughter of a lawyer and newspaper editor, Lee witnessed firsthand the racial tensions and legal intricacies of the American Deep South during the 1920s and 30s. Her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, once defended two black men accused of murder, an experience that partly inspired the novel’s central trial. A childhood friend of the famous writer Truman Capote, Lee drew upon her own memories of a small-town Southern upbringing to create the fictional world of Maycomb.
