Like its predecessor, AIKa R-16 is infamous for its abundance of fan service, primarily in the form of panty shots and nudity. The dialogue is snappy, and the interactions between Aika and the supporting cast help paper over some of the plot holes that inevitably arise in a short OVA format. The climax of the episode relies heavily on the chemistry between the leads, and the dub succeeds in making their partnership feel earned.
At the heart of is Aika S. Granzfeld, the protagonist. Aika's character development throughout the series, including episode 3, is noteworthy. Her transformation from a seemingly ordinary high school student to a key player in the fight against alien invaders is compelling and well-executed.
As they explore a hidden lab area, Karen’s memories begin to return. It is revealed that Karen is actually a clone from a genetic experiment , and she is the "key" required to unlock the facility's ancient technology. The final episode of the prequel OVA series,
is shown tinkering with gadgets late into the night, fueled by energy drinks and stubborn pride. Her lifestyle is pure chaotic academia.
