Modern versions of MAME require this specific zip file to be present in your roms folder alongside the game files. Without it, the game will either crash or run with no sound. 💡 Key Usage Tips
The "hle" in the filename stands for High-Level Emulation. Instead of fully emulating every technical detail of the hardware—which requires high CPU power—MAME uses HLE to "simulate" the final audio output, providing a faster, more efficient emulation.
Understanding qsound_hle.zip : The Missing Link in Arcade Emulation
Fixing the problem does not require reinstalling MAME or redownloading your game ROMs. Follow these steps: 1. Obtain the File
For a long time, MAME used a method called for QSound.
You might see this referred to as qsoundhle or simply the "new QSound core." The "hle" in the name during development was actually a bit of a misnomer (or a placeholder), but it represents a bridge between the legacy interface and the new, cycle-accurate emulation.
Developed by QSound Labs , is a proprietary 3D audio technology that provides virtual surround sound using only two standard stereo speakers. In the 1990s, Capcom integrated this technology into its flagship CPS2 arcade hardware.
Most players encounter this error because they downloaded a standalone game ROM (e.g., sfa3.zip for Street Fighter Alpha 3 ) assuming it contained everything needed to play. It does not.
system (e.g., Street Fighter Alpha , Marvel vs. Capcom ) Capcom ZN-1/ZN-2 hardware (e.g., Street Fighter EX )
The qsound_hle.zip file is a "device" or "BIOS" ROM required for the high-level emulation (HLE) of the audio processor. Developed by QSound Labs and famously licensed by Capcom, this chip was responsible for the rich, "virtual surround sound" experienced in 1990s arcades.
Understanding how MAME processes emulation devices will help you fix this error and optimize your retro emulation setup. What is QSound and why does MAME need it?
It is possible that by "hlezip," you are referring to the compression format used in older builds or specific "lite" versions of MAME where high-quality samples were zipped to save space.

Note to MIDI sequence contributors
Your submissions are welcomed.Â
Please send them by e-mail (end of text). Pieces
should bear the composer's name and be properly identified.(ex.: J.K. Mertz (1806-1856) Nocturne
Op.4 No.2.). The submissions
should bear information on the transcriber or arranger when available. The submitter's name
will appear beside the accepted submission.Â
Â
This site exists primarily to showcase pieces written for the classical
guitar. Established and recognized transcriptions and arrangements (e.g.,
Tarrega, Segovia,..) of pieces written by non-guitar composers will also be given
high priority. Â
New compositions for the classical guitar are also welcomed. New
compositions that meet quality guidelines will be added to the site. For
new contributors, it would be appreciated if you would also submit several
pieces by known composers in addition to your own compositions. This will
help to expand the repertoire of established works for the classical guitar in
addition to expanding the repertoire of new music.Â
